Student Comments about Languages Across the Curriculum
“My education thus far at TCNJ has made me a strong believer in the benefits of metaphysics. What I mean by this is the application of knowledge acquired in one area of study to another area of study. It is impossible to separate one academic sphere from another; no field exists in a vacuum. Language is no exception to this phenomenon…I strongly believe that we can learn so much more outside the classroom than inside. LAC provides an excellent opportunity to get out there and use your language skills in the community…. I cannot stress enough how much I enjoyed this experience.”
“All in all I think this program has been extremely beneficial to me and has enriched my ability to read and write in Italian and has allowed me to absorb new authentic Italian material which I can incorporate in my work and travel throughout Italia. Dr. Wright could not have been more enthusiastic and supportive in this process.”
“What I enjoyed most about my independent study was conducting the interviews. I found the interviewing experience to be very fulfilling. All three of my interviewee’s were exceptional individuals all with different and unique stories. It was truly a pleasure to learn about their experience and I was honored that they felt confident enough to share it with me. I feel that through this entire project I was able to practice my Spanish in several ways including conversation, interviews, translation, and the transcription.”
“… Languages Across the Curriculum … was useful and rewarding in that it induced me to seek foreign sources when researching my topic that I perhaps otherwise would not have considered searching, and in so doing amplified the significance of my paper.”
“The program Languages Across the Curriculum I think is a very positive one. We need to start looking at languages in different terms, and relating them to things outside the department. I think that it is very positive that this program has started because it demonstrates the benefits of knowing a second language well enough to make it a major component of a class that doesn’t focus on language.”
